The Oakland Youth Poet Laureate program is a citywide effort to celebrate literacy through poetry, center youth voice in Oakland’s thriving arts scene, and connect young writers to far-reaching opportunities. Coordinated by Oakland Public Library and Youth Speaks, the Youth Poet Laureate program hosts an annual poetry competition, public performances and mentoring for young artists. In addition to receiving the city’s top literary honor, the winning poet receives a $5,000 educational scholarship and embarks on a year of opportunities as an ambassador for literacy, arts and youth expression. The Youth Poet Laureate program is funded by the John diTargiani Fund at Youth Speaks Inc. and the Friends of the Oakland Public Library, and is supported by a volunteer committee of Oakland’s leading arts, education and community organizations.
